Summer Care Tips: A Guide from LifeSpring Community

As summer arrives we at LifeSpring Community Care want to ensure that ournesidents and their families are well-prepared for the warmer months. Summer is a time for enjoying the outdoors and summer fun time activities.  Here are some essential tips to help you stay safe and healthy this summer.

    1. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is crucial, especially during the hot summer months. Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration due to a decreased sense of thirst. Encourage regular water intake, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day. Remember, fruits like watermelon and cucumber can also help keep them hydrated.

    2. Protect Against the Sun iStock-1399196417

The sun in Georgia can be intense. Seniors should avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, typically from 10 AM to 4 PM. When outside, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 can help protect their skin. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often if sweating or swimming.

    3. Dress Appropriately

Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton can help keep seniors cool. Light-colored clothes reflect the sun’s rays better than dark colors. Layering is also a good strategy, as it allows for adjusting to temperature changes throughout the day.

    4. Stay Cool Indoors

Ensure that living spaces are kept cool, preferably between 68-78°F. Air conditioning is ideal, but if it’s not available, fans can help. Encourage seniors to spend time in air-conditioned public places like shopping malls or libraries during extreme heat waves.

    5. Eat Light and Healthy iStock-1371483622

Heavy meals can increase body temperature. Opt for smaller, more frequent meals that are light and nutritious. Fresh salads, fruits, and vegetables are excellent choices. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol as they can contribute to dehydration.

    6. Stay Active, But Wisely

Physical activity is important, but during the summer, it’s best to exercise during the cooler parts of the day – early morning or late evening. Indoor exercises like yoga or swimming in a cool pool can also be excellent alternatives.

    7. Monitor Medications

Certain medications can increase sensitivity to the sun and heat. Review medications with a healthcare provider to understand any potential side effects and necessary precautions. Keep a list of medications and bring it to all doctor visits.

    8. Be Aware of Heat-Related Illnesses

Seniors should know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and confusion. If any of these symptoms occur, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately and move to a cooler place.

Loneliness can increase during summer as families travel. Encourage regular check-ins from family, friends, or neighbors. Virtual gatherings or small, safe, in-person visits can help seniors stay connected and emotionally healthy.

    10. Plan Ahead

Have a summer emergency plan in place. This includes having a list of emergency contacts, knowing where the nearest cooling centers are, and ensuring all medical supplies and prescriptions are up-to-date.

At LifeSpring Community, we prioritize the well-being of our residents. By following these summer care tips, seniors can enjoy the warmth and beauty of summer while staying safe and healthy.
